“Because everyone wants insider info from underdog nobodies…”
Originating from macksville high school, the trio started off as good friends, but found an opportunity easily taken upon in music class. It was a jackpot won, getting an average of 200-250 minutes of band practice per week. The rest is… not quite history yet. But we’re working on it!
Ayms. H, on the Band;
“I write all, if not most, of the songs! It’s easy going with everything strings, but for drums? I pull up garage band beats…
As the frontwoman, it’s my duty to be as personal and self deprecating in the name of art as possible. I’m fine with that, my band almost works as some sort of exposure therapy for me. I’ll always be dorky, but I’m at least a happy dork in social situations.”
Lola. L, on the Band;
“I think the best part of this band is that it’s with my best friends, so I can be as mean as I want. But moving my kit is the second best part of it all (LIE). It’s funny to think that it started because of one festival. Also, Ayms is HORRIBLE at naming stuff… so I name most the stuff even though she writes it. :))”
“AND I WRITE THE DRUM BEATS!”
Elijah. B, on the Band;
“Well even though my instrument isn't really very hearable, it's still the coolest. However it isn't as good as the ukulele. As the bassist, my parts are all pretty simple EXCEPT for the ones Amy writes (all of them), though it’s fun to have a challenge and they all sound really cool!“

“Mainly Hues. No, not Hughes! like the colours!”
“We did it. We started a band.
Without telling Elijah, we figured the details out of this gig [Nambucca Valley, Open Streets Festival] we may play. The only problem was that our drummer didn’t have a kit… Luckily for us, she managed to convince her parents to buy one, second hand for 150.00$. Which is an insane deal. I recall Lola sending me a voice message on instagram of her kit, and just thinking how cool it sounded.”Note; We started the band just to play at a single festival. I called Lola up, saying how the festival was looking for local youth bands to play (I was already an AV tech volunteer for the festival, so I got lots of emails about it) and suggested that we should start a band. We kinda just assumed Elijah would be on board, so we were correct on that assumption. Funnily enough, one lunch at school when we were about to ask to use the practice rooms, we overheard our music teacher recommend some other kids to play at the same festival. We ended up talking about it to her, and she said that our band should sort it through the school to avoid insurance costs.Fun fact; those other kids did not end up playing. I was glad about that, because they could SHRED.

This was our first gig, and first public gig! We only had a few rehearsals outside of school, at Ayms house. We performed right after our schools band, and played two songs only; Kan’t Be and Hey Porky.
It went better than any of us expected it to. Our families were in the audience, as well as strangers. That day we were supposed to decide whether to break up immediately or continue, and the answer was obvious as soon as we were done. The rest of the day was amazing, and the fireworks were crazy.However, we did realise one horrible truth if we stayed together; we’d have to rehearse like a normal band, outside of school. What a fate, I know…

“The Urunga originals was a great experience to learn from. Speaking of which, I think the band is starting to play better together as a whole! We are making songs a lot quicker than we were before ,so expect to see some new drops, like how we played lavender’s cordial for the first time!!! A song about our best friend. Personally, I think it’s an amazing song overall, the people and experience was so amazing. I would definitely like to play at the Urunga originals again” - Lola, of MH.

The more we play, the better we get. It’s interesting to watch as everyone further develops their skills. There was a local interviewer running around and taking photos, as this marked the day of our schools 75th anniversary exposition. While we weren’t the centre of attention, we did get our first press buzz (technically). Maybe we didn’t get a wider audience out of this event, but we did reveal to our teachers who we really were. I remember talking to my HSIE teacher afterwards, because I was given the task of handing out school calendars, and he told me how I was also shy and quiet in class (which I understood to an extent, but I was still a bum in class sometimes) and how all of a sudden I was just playing and singing all confident. He serenaded me after that, I really wish I could have recorded that conversation because wow. His singing was… so beautiful.“It was good to play at the expo I had a great time and it was all pretty relaxed” — Lola, of MH.
